What Is Important for Dried Meat Packaging?

The right packaging depends on what the product needs to be protected from, how it is filled, how long it will be stored and how customers use it after opening. For dried meat, focus on the following:

  • High oxygen barrier — Fat oxidation can affect flavour and quality, so oxygen control is important for many dried-meat products.

  • Moisture control — The package should help maintain the product's intended water activity and texture during distribution.

  • Strong hermetic seal — Shelf-stable meat products depend on a properly validated product and packaging process; the final top seal must be dependable.

  • Light barrier — Opaque structures provide additional protection for light-sensitive products.

  • Resealable ZIP — Useful after first opening, while the original heat seal provides tamper evidence before sale.

Dried Meat Packaging Size Guide

What Size Pouch Do I Need for Dried meat?

Products are normally sold by weight, while flexible packaging is specified by volume. Because bulk density varies from product to product, the same weight can require very different pouch sizes.

As a starting point, jerky and dried meat strips typically have a bulk density of approximately 0.30–0.40 g/ml — irregular pieces trap a lot of air. We also recommend leaving sufficient headspace so the pouch can be filled and the zipper or top seal closed comfortably.

Dried meat weight Approx. product volume Recommended pouch volume
50 g≈ 140 ml175–200 ml
100 g≈ 290 ml325–375 ml
250 g≈ 710 ml800–900 ml
500 g≈ 1,450 ml1,600–1,800 ml

Important: This dried meat pouch size guide is approximate. Small chunks and bites pack denser than long strips, and vacuum-style tight packing changes the picture entirely. If you are unsure which size you need, order a sample and test it with your actual product before placing a larger order.

Recyclable Packaging & PPWR

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is changing how packaging placed on the European market is designed, evaluated and recycled. For producers planning their future packaging, recyclability is becoming an increasingly important consideration.

We are here

2025

PPWR in force

The new EU packaging regulation replaced the old directive.

2026

Rules apply

Most obligations start applying across all EU member states.

2030

Recyclable by design

All packaging on the EU market must be designed for recycling.

2035

Recycled at scale

Packaging must also be collected and recycled in practice.

2040

Stricter targets

Higher recycled-content and waste-reduction targets apply.

22pack offers recyclable packaging options, including PE-based pouch structures with EVOH barrier options, alongside conventional high-barrier packaging for products where greater protection is required.

Test the Packaging Before You Order

If you are unsure about size, material or barrier level, order samples and test them with the actual product. A physical filling test is the most reliable way to check capacity, headspace, zipper usability, sealing and overall presentation.

Dried Meat Packaging FAQ

What packaging is best for beef jerky?+

High-barrier flexible packaging is commonly used. For 22pack, aluminium-layered doypacks are the most appropriate starting point for demanding dried-meat applications.

Can I use recyclable PE pouches for jerky?+

Suitability depends on the product, required shelf life and validated barrier specification. For demanding applications, start with the higher-barrier aluminium range and test.

Does jerky packaging need a ZIP?+

A ZIP is useful for consumer convenience, but it does not replace the initial heat seal.

Can I test the packaging first?+

Yes. Testing samples with the actual finished product is strongly recommended for dried meat.

Can the pouches be customized with our brand?+

Yes. Depending on the pouch, 22pack offers branding through custom labels, printing and selected decorative finishes such as hot stamping.

How do I choose the right pouch size?+

Use the actual product rather than weight alone. Bulk density varies, so compare the product volume with the pouch specification and leave enough headspace for clean closing and heat sealing.

Find the Right Dried Meat Packaging

Compare pouch formats, barrier structures, finishes and sizes, then test the strongest candidates with your product. Choose the option that balances protection, usability, shelf presentation and your sustainability priorities.
