What Is Important for Dried Fruit Packaging?

The right packaging depends on what the product needs to be protected from, how it is filled, how long it will be stored and how customers use it after opening. For dried fruit, focus on the following:

  • Moisture barrier — Dried fruit can gain or lose moisture during storage, changing texture and quality.

  • Oxygen barrier — Oxidation can affect colour, flavour and sensitive ingredients, especially over longer storage.

  • Light protection — Freeze-dried and colour-sensitive products may benefit from opaque packaging.

  • Resealable closure — ZIP packaging helps protect the remaining product after opening.

  • Product visibility — For colourful dried fruit, a window or transparent pouch can be a powerful merchandising feature.

Dried Fruit Packaging Size Guide

What Size Pouch Do I Need for Dried fruit?

Products are normally sold by weight, while flexible packaging is specified by volume. Because bulk density varies from product to product, the same weight can require very different pouch sizes.

As a starting point, conventionally dried fruit (raisins, dates, apricots) typically has a bulk density of approximately 0.55–0.70 g/ml. We also recommend leaving sufficient headspace so the pouch can be filled and the zipper or top seal closed comfortably.

Dried fruit weight Approx. product volume Recommended pouch volume
100 g≈ 160 ml200 ml
250 g≈ 400 ml450–500 ml
500 g≈ 800 ml900–1,000 ml
750 g≈ 1,200 ml1,350–1,500 ml
1 kg≈ 1,600 ml1,800–2,000 ml

Important: This dried fruit pouch size guide is approximate — and it applies to conventionally dried fruit only. Freeze-dried fruit is dramatically lighter and can need several times more volume for the same weight. If you are unsure which size you need, order a sample and test it with your actual product before placing a larger order.

Recyclable Packaging & PPWR

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is changing how packaging placed on the European market is designed, evaluated and recycled. For producers planning their future packaging, recyclability is becoming an increasingly important consideration.

We are here

2025

PPWR in force

The new EU packaging regulation replaced the old directive.

2026

Rules apply

Most obligations start applying across all EU member states.

2030

Recyclable by design

All packaging on the EU market must be designed for recycling.

2035

Recycled at scale

Packaging must also be collected and recycled in practice.

2040

Stricter targets

Higher recycled-content and waste-reduction targets apply.

22pack offers recyclable packaging options, including PE-based pouch structures with EVOH barrier options, alongside conventional high-barrier packaging for products where greater protection is required.

Test the Packaging Before You Order

If you are unsure about size, material or barrier level, order samples and test them with the actual product. A physical filling test is the most reliable way to check capacity, headspace, zipper usability, sealing and overall presentation.

Dried Fruit Packaging FAQ

What packaging is best for freeze-dried fruit?+

Freeze-dried fruit is highly sensitive to moisture, so a strong moisture barrier is critical. High-barrier opaque structures are often preferred.

Why does dried fruit need moisture-barrier packaging?+

Moisture transfer can make dry products soft or sticky and can change texture during storage.

Can dried fruit be sold in clear pouches?+

Yes, when product visibility is valuable and the product's light sensitivity and required shelf life allow it.

Do you offer recyclable dried fruit pouches?+

Yes. PE-based recyclable pouches with EVOH barrier options are available.

Can the pouches be customized with our brand?+

Yes. Depending on the pouch, 22pack offers branding through custom labels, printing and selected decorative finishes such as hot stamping.

How do I choose the right pouch size?+

Use the actual product rather than weight alone. Bulk density varies, so compare the product volume with the pouch specification and leave enough headspace for clean closing and heat sealing.

Find the Right Dried Fruit Packaging

Compare pouch formats, barrier structures, finishes and sizes, then test the strongest candidates with your product. Choose the option that balances protection, usability, shelf presentation and your sustainability priorities.
