What Is Important for Cocoa Packaging?

The right packaging depends on what the product needs to be protected from, how it is filled, how long it will be stored and how customers use it after opening. For cocoa, focus on the following:

  • Moisture protection — Fine cocoa powder can absorb moisture and cake, so water-vapour barrier and a reliable seal matter.

  • Aroma protection — Barrier packaging helps retain cocoa aroma while reducing exposure to external odours.

  • Oxygen barrier — Cocoa contains natural fats and aromatic compounds that benefit from reduced oxygen exposure.

  • Powder-tight sealing — Fine products require clean filling and dependable heat seals.

  • Resealable ZIP — Useful for drinking chocolate and cocoa products consumed over multiple servings.

Cocoa Packaging Size Guide

What Size Pouch Do I Need for Cocoa?

Products are normally sold by weight, while flexible packaging is specified by volume. Because bulk density varies from product to product, the same weight can require very different pouch sizes.

As a starting point, loosely filled cocoa powder typically has a bulk density of approximately 0.35–0.45 g/ml; it settles and compacts during transport. We also recommend leaving sufficient headspace so the pouch can be filled and the zipper or top seal closed comfortably.

Cocoa weight Approx. product volume Recommended pouch volume
100 g≈ 250 ml275–325 ml
250 g≈ 620 ml700–800 ml
500 g≈ 1,250 ml1,400–1,600 ml
750 g≈ 1,900 ml2,100–2,400 ml
1 kg≈ 2,500 ml2,800–3,200 ml

Important: This cocoa pouch size guide is approximate. Freshly sifted powder is lighter than settled powder, and drinking-chocolate mixes with sugar are denser than pure cocoa. If you are unsure which size you need, order a sample and test it with your actual product before placing a larger order.

Recyclable Packaging & PPWR

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is changing how packaging placed on the European market is designed, evaluated and recycled. For producers planning their future packaging, recyclability is becoming an increasingly important consideration.

We are here

2025

PPWR in force

The new EU packaging regulation replaced the old directive.

2026

Rules apply

Most obligations start applying across all EU member states.

2030

Recyclable by design

All packaging on the EU market must be designed for recycling.

2035

Recycled at scale

Packaging must also be collected and recycled in practice.

2040

Stricter targets

Higher recycled-content and waste-reduction targets apply.

22pack offers recyclable packaging options, including PE-based pouch structures with EVOH barrier options, alongside conventional high-barrier packaging for products where greater protection is required.

Test the Packaging Before You Order

If you are unsure about size, material or barrier level, order samples and test them with the actual product. A physical filling test is the most reliable way to check capacity, headspace, zipper usability, sealing and overall presentation.

Cocoa Packaging FAQ

What packaging is best for cocoa powder?+

A resealable pouch with good moisture and oxygen barrier is a practical choice for most retail cocoa powders.

Does cocoa powder need moisture-barrier packaging?+

Yes. Moisture uptake can cause caking and affect product quality.

Can cocoa be packed in recyclable pouches?+

Yes. 22pack offers recyclable PE/EVOH options suitable for many dry powdered products.

Are ZIP pouches suitable for hot chocolate powder?+

Yes. They are convenient for products measured out over multiple uses.

Can the pouches be customized with our brand?+

Yes. Depending on the pouch, 22pack offers branding through custom labels, printing and selected decorative finishes such as hot stamping.

How do I choose the right pouch size?+

Use the actual product rather than weight alone. Bulk density varies, so compare the product volume with the pouch specification and leave enough headspace for clean closing and heat sealing.

Find the Right Cocoa Packaging

Compare pouch formats, barrier structures, finishes and sizes, then test the strongest candidates with your product. Choose the option that balances protection, usability, shelf presentation and your sustainability priorities.
